I would like to take the time to discuss several items at this time which have
taken up far too much time and wasted too many trees for our reading enjoyment.
First we look at the topic of oil coolers. We must first understand that we are talking about a part that is used to help prevent wear to an engine. I can agree that if oil is too cool it can cause wear to a motor but if it is fitted with a thermostat I see no harm in fitting an cooler. This is also another point I would like to bring to light is that motor oil can also cool the temp. of the engine itself. If the motor oil is hotter than the coolant it will transfer unwanted heat to the motor. We must also understand that this is not an attack on those who made OUR cars but it is a measure to save our prized possessions. Another point to consider is that in some parts of the world the traffic may allow us to drive for one hour to only move one-quarter of a mile. Just about this time you may be thankful for a cooler.
When the speed tests were performed it did not simulate traffic conditions. You see in traffic you are not moving and when speeding you are, which will pass air through and under the car which will cause your oil temp to lower. One last note and we will hopefully put this topic to rest. I was recently viewing some photos of one of my favorite things, auto racing. I was looking at several photographs of the 450s racing and noticed something that caught my eye. On two of the photos I thought I saw an oil cooler in the air inlet. The author of the book mentioned it also, so I believe that is what it is. Can we be mistaken?
Second topic is number plates. I do agree that knowing that you can date and know the location by the number is of limited interest. But thats about it, LIMITED. The log book of my Bristol reflects that it wore one of these plates but who cares? This doesnt change anything about the car. It is still a Bristol 406. I also believe that what someone does with their own business is exactly that, their business!
From this point onwards I propose that we spend our time writing about fun trips in our cars. I know that I will be spending time thinking of alternative fuels if crude oil is no longer available. What do you guys think, solar powered Bristol? I will keep you appraised of any thoughts. Until then I will keep on burning the ole gasoline.
Happy Motoring,
Shawn Thomas
